Hungry Buddha
Thai's are an extremely suspicious nation. It is amazing how they take things so literally. I recently heard of an event that happened about 50 years ago. A women had left her baby on the side whilst she went into the temple to make her bows to the great Buddha. When she returned her baby had disappeared. The women concluded that the image had eaten the baby. Rumours spread and now all throughout Thailand pregnant women and women with young children avoid the Buddha with real caution. This reclining golden Buddha is considered the biggest and most revered in the country. Thankfully we didn't witness any munching baby action!

I had a similiar experience in Nepal near the village Mate. There is a goddess (not sure which one) temple on the far side of a really thin ridgeline. During the hundreds of years the temple has been there, a few women have fallen off the ridge and died. The temple has been declared safe for men only, so women are only allowed to visit once a year on a particularly auspicious day.
It is considered a very powerful temple, and I found this idea of keeping that Goddess power away from women in partiuclar fairly troubling.
